EDUCATION

Yale University - PhD, 20th century US history (2020 - 2026)

Specializations in environmental history; history of public health; policy history; history of medicine; welfare history; and American Political Development. Dissertation successfully defended in May 2026.

Dissertation: 'Shortcomings That Plague': Prevention Politics in the Austerity Era

My dissertation examined the recent history of preventive health policy in the United States, particularly as it pertains to corporate pollution, chronic illness, and federal austerity. I am interested both in the ways that corporate polluters shaped health and welfare policies, and how the people most affected by corporate pollution experienced these policies in their own communities. Fundamentally, my research asks why policymakers and large swathes of the public accepted chronically poor health as the default condition, rather than the product of deliberate and changeable policy choices, from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s.
